Introduction

In March 2020 NHS England announced their plans to provide additional facilities for patients with Covid-19, due to the exceptional circumstances the NHS faced.

The plan involved rolling out a series of hospitals in very short order to give specialist, critical care to those who needed it.

At short notice, FEL Group mobilised 22 engineers were deployed to work back-to-back shifts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for 3 weeks.

NHS managers worked alongside military planners and engineers to open a total of 7 temporary hospitals to cope with the Covid-19 Pandemic. These field hospitals aimed to provide around 3000 additional beds with specialist equipment, specifically to treat patients who contracted Covid-19 and had complex medical needs.

Our engineers turned their skills from installing refrigeration systems to medical gas lines. This project entailed fitting gas lines from storage tanks to bedside equipment.

The NHS Nightingale hospital is now fully equipped to provide critical care to patients from across Yorkshire and the Humber who have been diagnosed with Covid-19 and are already in-patients in other hospitals within the region.

The NHS Nightingale Hospital’s aim is to support critical care for the most complex patients within their own hospitals whilst caring for other, less complex cases in the new facility.

In this case timescales and budget were mission critical to ensure additional bed capacity was available if needed. The facility can now provide up to 500 additional critical care beds and has been available since the 21st April 2020.

FEL Group understood the express requirements from this project and provided a seamless shift service in order to complete the project on time and within the planned budget and timeframe.
